The use of the Team Based Learning (TBL) approach has risen sharply in higher education since the early 2000s. A growing evidence base has been the impetus for increased use of TBL in Europe over the past decade, particularly in health sciences. European Team Based Learning Symposia have been organised by the European Team Based Learning Community each year since 2022 highlighting how TBL is being used by early adopters at the modular and programme level across Europe in health sciences and beyond. Within the past five years, universities such as University of Manchester, Brunel University, Queen Mary University London, Nova Medical School (Lisbon) have adopted TBL as a “signature pedagogy” within their medicine programmes.

This workshop is targeted at faculty/lecturers who may be leading innovations in teaching and learning within the Work and Organisational Psychology domain. This workshop will introduce participants to the TBL approach and how it can be used within Work and Organisational Psychology modules for enhanced learning and the development of employability skills.

Participants will “learn by doing”, experiencing TBL as a Work and Organisational Psychology student would. Attendees will be allocated to diverse teams. They will then go through the sequence of steps that differentiates TBL from other approaches:

  • Step 1: “Pre-class” assignment;
  • Step 2: Individual and team readiness assurance assessment;
  • Step 3: A clarification session tailored to their learning needs;
  • Step 4: 4S “Application Exercises”, followed by facilitated whole class discussion.

Having experienced TBL from the student perspective, attendees will then reflect on considering how TBL could be implemented within their own teaching. They will also design their own 4S Application Exercises relevant to a module that they teach, with feedback and support from the workshop facilitator.
